Change is the new opportunity

It’s the first Monday of April and the news is full of budget cuts starting to bite, tales of people starting now to face the reality of recent government changes at the start of the new financial year.

I’ve been laid off twice in the past, and more times than I wanted to have had to tell others their roles were redundant. As people go through whatever change curves of disbelief, anger and acceptance, it helps to hang on to the belief that this type of change can be seen as an opportunity, that being put way out of your comfort zone more often than not finds you in a new landscape to be embraced rather than feared.

I have been sitting back a little from the job market as I am fortunate enough to be spending time with my toddler and schoolgirl as they grow, and have been focused on providing the support and encouragement they need as they move towards ever-greater independence.

In looking at moving up a few gears and being in a position to turn up my working life focus again, while maintaining the conscious decision to remain very involved in my children’s care, I have been exploring where I can draw ongoing motivation and the strength to go ahead and realise the dream of an integrated internet and social media strategy offering for small to medium sized business, drawing on my years of experience in large corporate organisations working on online strategy, organisation and operations.

Working for yourself is so different to being part of a large corporate machine, and a mentor who is passionate, authentic and able to listen to and take part in your journey, who has been there and is successful at what they do is a critical part of moving towards enhanced success.

If you want to sample the wise words and practical advice of Michael Hope of expertlearning, you can try out his approach with a free taster, The 6 Traits of a Successful Independent Consultant.

I found this a really engaging summary that poses the right questions about whether your expertise and experience can be untapped and repackaged to allow you to build an effective business. It made me stop and think – then start again quickly with more knowledge and more ability to help me.

So if you have been affected by recent layoffs, want to get back into work after a break, or just feel with the spring weather it is time for a change, give this Free Guide to Successful Consultancy a go, it may be the trigger for you too to make positive changes and make 2011 the year you stand on your own successes and become a successful independent consultant.
